Excess unwanted hair is an embarrassment. Removal of unwanted hair can be time consuming, costly and painful. Traditional methods for removing unwanted hair have included waxing, shaving, bleaching, plucking, depilatory creams and electrolysis. While some of these methods may be useful they certainly have their downside. Lasers have been used for hair removal for several years with new technology constantly changing and improving previous limitations.
Who can get laser hair removal?
In the past, laser hair removal was limited to light skinned individuals with dark hair. This was the case because early generation lasers were unable to distinguish between skin pigment and hair follicles, which led to the burning of those with darker skin. Now, with the advent of new lasers which target the pigment located in the hair follicle as well as have the added special contact cooling hand piece which protects and cools the skin, treatment of all skin colors can be safely achieved.
What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal can be performed on just about any location on the body. Here are the most commonly treated areas using laser hair removal:
- for Women
- Upper lip hair removal
- Chin hair removal
- Eyebrow area hair removal
- Bikini line hair removal
- Leg hair removal
- Underarm hair removal
- for Men
- Back hair removal
- Chest hair removal
- Neck hair removal
- Shoulders hair removal
- Eyebrow area hair removal
How many treatments are needed?
The total number of treatments will vary between individuals and with treatment location. For example, treatment of the legs usually requires 3 treatments while the upper lip may take 8 or more. Most people require an average of about 5 to 6 treatments for significant clearance of hair. Some people may require more, some less. Treatments are usually performed every 4 to 6 weeks. Results following a series of treatments are expected to last from 6 to 24 months.
What should I expect during and after laser hair removal?
Sun protection is absolutely necessary before and in between laser treatments. A suntan will predispose you to blister formation and pigmentary changes. During laser hair removal many patients experience a transient stinging sensation similar to the snap of a rubber band. In most cases this discomfort is well tolerated, but occasionally a topical anesthetic cream may be used under the direction of Dr. Wooming. Immediately after treatment, redness and swelling develop which should subside in 1 to 2 days.
