Eximer Laser

Which skin disorders does the Eximer laser treat?

The Eximer laser has been approved to treat vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and leukoderma.

Vitiligo is an aquired loss of pigmentation characterized by the absence of pigment cells called melanocytes in the top layer of the skin.

Psoriasis is a genetically transmitted life long skin disease that causes red scaling patches to appear on your skin.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic itchy severely dry skin disease that begins in childhood and may continue throughout life.

Leukoderma is a deficiency of pigmentation in the skin that causes unsightly white spots and skin discoloration. It can be caused by a variety of problems such as injury from trauma or laser skin resurfacing, surgical scaring, stretch marks or burns.

How does the Eximer laser work?

The XTRAC Eximer laser system uses a monochromatic wavelength of UVB light and concentrates that light through a unique fiber optic system. This system allows the clinician to treat localized affected areas without exposing the entire body to radiation. It also allows for a higher fluence (dosage of UVB) to be delivered to the affected area thereby resulting in more improvement with fewer treatment sessions.

Conventional phototherapy for psoriasis and repigmentation therapy including PUVA and Narrow Band UVB for vitiligo, can be very costly and highly time consuming. The Eximer laser now gives patients the opportunity to utilize a technology that is both cost effective and time efficient.

What should I expect during an Eximer laser treatment?

The laser handpiece will be moved over the affected area focusing laser light at the dose determined by Dr. Wooming. This usually only takes a few minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. The laser treatment is painless and does not require any anesthetic. Treatment frequency varies from patient to patient and will be determined by Dr. Wooming during your initial visit.
