What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a safe and natural injectable filler used for correction of facial wrinkles and folds as well as for augmentation of lips. Restylane® is a gel made of “Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid” or NASHA. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that exists naturally in the body, so allergy testing is not needed prior to Restylane® treatment.
What areas are best treated with Restylane®?
Restylane® works best at treating facial lines and folds such as:
- Nasolabial folds (the lines extending from the outside corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth)
- Frown lines (the lines extending down from the corners of your mouth)
- Lines located around the lips (sometimes referred to as smokers lines)
Restylane® can also be used to enhance or plump up the lips and to fill in depressed acne scars.
How long does Restylane® last?
The duration of the Restylane® injectable filler is dependant upon the treatment site and the way each individual person metabolizes the product. Results from a treatment with Restylane® generally last about 6 months. Typically patients will schedule treatments twice a year. Sometimes a touch up Restylane® treatment may be needed before the product has fully dissipated – this extra treatment can help enhance the fillers lasting effect.
What should I expect during and after treatment with Restylane®?
Restylane® is a simple office procedure that provides immediate results. A topical anesthetic cream or anesthetic nerve block is used to numb the area of injection and minimize pain. Small amounts of the crystal clear gel filler are injected with a fine needle into the treatment site. The gel produces volume under the skin to lift up and smooth out lines or plump up lips. Restylane® treated areas may be red, swollen or bruised for a few days after a treatment. Avoiding aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and nutritional supplements such as gingko biloba, Saint-John’s-wort and vitamin E will help decrease the risk of bruising.
