BOTOX® for treatment of hyperhidrosis

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that causes excess sweating secondary to hyperfunction of the sweat glands. The brain sends off signals stimulating the nerve endings of sweat glands causing the glands to produce sweat. In many people these nerves are triggered by emotional stress, physical activity and increased body temperature.

BOTOX® for hyperhidrosis

BOTOX® has recently gained FDA approval for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (severe underarm sweating) that cannot be controlled with topical medications. This development has significantly impacted the lives of patient’s who suffer from the embarrassment of excessive sweating. This disorder can be very debilitating socially, mentally and can affect work performance and career choices. Patients with hyperhidrosis may have to change clothes frequently; carry extra clothes, antiperspirant’s, powders or towels; discard stained clothing or spend extra money for dry cleaning to try to remove stains; cancel social plans because of the fear of severe sweating and spend time thinking about their underarm sweating throughout the day.

How does BOTOX® work?

BOTOX® Hyperhidrosis treatment can prevent sweating for months by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter from the nerve ending, thus blocking the signal that causes the gland to produce sweat.

How long will the treatment results last?

Underarm sweating will be decreased by up to 90% within 2 days and full effect will be obtained in 1 to 2 weeks. Most people will obtain the benefits of dryness with one treatment and results will last anywhere from about 6 to 8 months.

Will the treatment be covered by insurance?
