Chemical Peels

What can a chemical peel do for me?

Light peel — used to give skin a healthy radiant glow and to improve the appearance of mild wrinkling and sun damage. A series of light facial chemical peels can also be used to treat acne and mild acne scarring. A light peel will exfoliate the face, loosen up clogged pores and help clear the most stubborn acne. For a superficial facial peel we use glycolic acid which is an alpha-hydroxy acid found naturally in food products.

Medium depth peel — used to treat mild to moderate wrinkles and pigmentation problems. Dr. Wooming uses a concentration of Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) and Jessners solution to produce a medium depth TCA facial peel.

Deep peel — with the recent advancements in laser technology deep chemical peels are being replaced by cosmetic laser procedures to avoid pigment loss and painful lengthy healing. In place of a deep peel Dr. Wooming now uses the Fraxel™ laser for skin resurfacing.

How does chemical peeling work?

A chemical peel uses a solution applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. It tightens the skin, treats acne and mild acne scarring, improves textural and pigmentation irregularities, reduces wrinkling and restores a more youthful appearance.

What should I expect during and after a chemical peel?

As a general rule the deeper the peel the longer the downtime. Depending on the type and depth of the peel, a reaction similar to a sunburn will occur. During a peel most patients experience some warmth followed by a stinging sensation. Light peeling sometimes called a “lunch-time peel” involves mild redness followed by some peeling for a few days. Light chemical peels take just a few minutes to perform and patients can return back to work immediately following the procedure. Medium depth peeling can result in redness, swelling and crusting that can last up to 2 weeks. These deeper peels can require dressings with ointment to keep the skin moist.

Following any peel it is important that you avoid any exposure to the sun and use sunscreen daily. Your new skin is sensitive and susceptible to injury. Retin–A or other retinoid creams should not be used several days before and after a peel.

Can chemical peels be combined with other procedures?

Chemical peeling may be combined with other laser procedures or
cosmetic treatments, microdermabrasion or a personalized skin care
program to achieve optimal skin rejuvenation.
